Forêt de la Braconne

This is a vast forest [4 000 hectares]. Subsidence has created chasms, caves and pits. A remarkable landscape of moors, coppices of oak and hornbeam inhabited by roe deer and genets legend has it that the Devil roams here.

Forêt de Bois Blanc

To the east of Angoulême, it covers over 700 hectares on a plateau of limestone hillocks and underground caves. Within the forest of oak, beech and hornbeam are several small lakes [lake Coquet, lake Perrot].

This forest in the Ruffec area is planted with oak and hornbeam interspersed with dry grass and thriving orchids and flax. There are hidden tumuli and dolmens called « pierre des fades or fairy stone ».

Forêt de la Mothe Clédou

This national forest in the east of the Charente covers almost 1,000 hectares. Chestnuts are omnipresent along with tall conifers which adore the sandy soil. The hoopers' lodges are a reminder of the ancestral activity of making barrel hoops.
