After the conquest of Gaul, in order to keep the « pax romana » the Romans relied upon a network of ancient roads. In the Charente Limousine, on one of these routes, the thermal sanctuary welcomed large numbers of people taking the waters. This can be seen in the pools, the vast network of aqueducts, the hot and cold chambers, the ex-voto offered by the pilgrims. Chassenon, which is remarkably well preserved, is the largest group of Gallo-Roman thermal baths in Europe.
