On the banks of the Charente, between the bridges and the locks at Jarnac, the museum with its contemporary architecture of wood and glass stands side by side with the old buildings. Moving from room to room enables the visitor to understand vine growing and raising the eaux-de-vie. The perfumed barrels reveal the secrets of the intimate relationship between the oak and the eau-de-vie. Napoleonic memorabilia (frock coat, hat, letters ) illustrate the history of Courvoisier cognac.

The cognac of Napoléon

At the start of the 19th century, Emmanuel Courvoisier founded a wine and spirits brokerage with Louis Gallois. Thanks to his relations with certain field marshals he became the supplier to the Imperial Court.
In 1835, he settled in Jarnac and refocused his activities around cognac. When Napoléon Ist was exiled to St. Helena, he took barrels of cognac with him. The English soldiers who accompanied him spoke of the "brandy of Napoléon".
